Monica Seles

Monica Seles was born in December 1973. She is a world No1 retired tennis female player who became the Hall of famer later. She was Hungarian from ethnic group. United States citizen in 1994.

In 1990, she became the French Champion youngest ever.  However, on April 30, 1993, she was the victim of an on-court attack, when a man stabbed her in the back with a 9-inch (23 cm) long knife.Seles did not return to tennis for over two years. Though she enjoyed some success after rejoining the tour in 1995, including a fourth Australian Open title in 1996, she was unable to consistently reproduce her best form.

In June 2011, Seles was named one of the “30 Legends of Women’s Tennis.

Early life and career

Monica was born in  Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. She began playing tennis at age five. her father was a cartoonist and used to draw a large number of pictures. In 1985 Jelena Genčić. was her coach. In 1986 the Seles family moved from Yugoslavia to the United States, Seles played her first professional tournament as an amateur in 1988 at age 14. After a slow start she went on a 36-match winning streak.She Facing world no. 1 Steffi Graf in the final of 1990, where she defeated her to take her German pride away.

Her winning streak was stopped by Zina Garrison. She dominated the Tennis world in 1991. She defeated  Martina Navratilova in the US Open. Seles had won 10 out of the 16 tournaments she entered. 1992 was an equally great year for the great Monica.She also reached her first-ever final at Wimbledon, but lost to Graf.

Stabbing

She was stabbed by a crazy Stefi Graph Fan while playing in the Hamburg, Germany. The German guy was abnormal and he was therefore not sent to jail. Seles was in the hospital for the rest of the tournament and also missed the year 1993 important matches. Later in 2011 she said that the security has not much changed by then in the Tennis Courts.

Comeback To Game

Seles returned to game in 1995. She reached the final of US Open and defeated world No 10. In 1996, Seles won her fourth Australian Open, beating Anke Huber. She helped the U.S. team win the Fed Cup in 1996, 1999, and 2000.

In spring 2003, Monica sustained an injury into her foot. She was forced to get retired hurt against an important match in the Italian Open. She played the 2003 French Open while being hurt, but she lost it. After that she announced her retirement and never again played an international match.

Post Retirement

In2005,Monica Seles played two exhibition matches in New Zealand against Navratilova. She again played three exhibition matches against Navratilova in 2007. She was inspired was the impressive comeback of Lindsay Davenport in 2007 and announced her own return for limited number of matches in the Grand Slam. Monica Seles was listed as the 13th greatest player of all time. Her career was greatly affected by that stabbing incident and she remembers her as the black day in the Tennis world.
