Biography of the great Legend of the Baseball Hank Greenberg.

Hank Greenberg born on January 1, 1911 in New York City. Hank Greenberg was one of first Jewish super stars of Major League Baseball’s, while playing for the Detroit Tigers. He was an American Professional baseball player in 1930 to 1940. Being a native of the Bronx, it was not surprising when Greenberg was offered a contract by the New York Yankees. However he was not willing to play against Lou Gehrig for the 1St Base position and instead signed with the Detroit Tigers, facing prejudice on the road.

His full names were “Henry Benjamin Greenberg ’, while his nickname was “The Hebrew hammer”. He belongs to a Rumanian Jewish Family. His Mother Was Romanian immigrants while his father was American, both of his father and mother met in America and were married in New York. Initially his family lived in tenements on borrowed street and then Perry Street. Hank had two brothers, Benjamin, four Years older, and Joseph, five years Younger, and one sister Lillian two years Older. His Father was a successful businessman. When Hank was sis years his family moves to a Crotona park section of the Bronx. His father, David was the owner of the small textile mill, where material was shrunk in order to make suits, while his mother, Sarah, was a housewife. His family’s life in Crotona Park was peaceful and humdrum.

His Family was a predominantly section, Greenberg practically Knew nothing of Anti-Semitism. Greenberg admitted P.S. 44 public schools to get an elementary education in the Bronx. After completing his elementary education, he went at James Monroe HS (Bronx, NY), to high school. He loved track, baseball, soccer and Basketball in high school. Greenberg’s passion was baseball. He spends most of his time to play baseball, and used all his money to buy tape to keep the baseball from falling apart. His motto was since he was not a “natural talent” like Babe Ruth; he would not work with everyone else. He left his school to a New York City title (1929) and graduating high school, and enrolled in New York University on a basketball scholarship. In college he played basketball for the NYU, he also played semi-Pro Baseball for the Red Bank Toners and the Brooklyn Bay Parkways. He earned a very good name in baseball at university time, and heavily scouted as a player and the Giants, Yankees and Tigers showed interest.

He Started baseball career primarily for the Detroit Tigers, Hank was one of the best hitters of his generation. In 1938, he hit 58 home runs, equal to Jimmie Foxx’s 19332 made for the most runs in one season by any player between 1927, when Babe Ruth set a record of 60 runs and 1961, when Roger Morris exceeded it.

Greenberg stayed a five time All Star, with a most valuable baseball player. He was elected to the hall of the Fames in 1956. He marked lots of records during his baseball career; he became the first major league player to hit 25 or more home runs in a season in each league, and stayed the American League record-holder for most RBIs in a single season by right-handed hitter (183 in 1937, a 154- game schedule). His career was ended due to shortened to him serving 45 months in the U.S Armed Forces in World War II. He sold his contract to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947, making him the first baseball player to earn over €80, 000 a year. He was one of the opposing players to publicly welcome Jackie Robinson to the major leagues.
