Javed Miandad (Legendary Batsman)


“Muhammad Javed Miandad” was is a retired Pakistani Cricketer and a legendary batsman born in 1957.His legendary career spanned across 20 years between 1975 to 1996. He also remained the captain of Pakistan during 90s when his services were needed. After his retirement, Javed also served as a coach for Pakistani team. He was the world class batsman among Zaheer Abbas, Saeed Anwar, Asif Iqnal and Majid Khan.He also held a position in the Pakistan Cricket board as required by the board.

Batting and Early Career

Javed was a great cricketer with 5 feet 8 inch height. He was a master right hand batsman famous for his smart batting in any situation and winning the games for Pakistan. He made “reverse sweep” famous with his unique batting style. Many cricketers of India and Europe followed his style of batting during 80s and 90s.

He played his first test against Newzealand in 1976 and first ODI against West Indies in 1975. He did wonderful batting performance in first world cup in 1975 and the first man to score 1000 world cup runs in the 1992 world cup. Until 1979 he played for English county Sussexx and played for Habib Bank of Pakistan in the domestic cricket. He was a Karachi boy originally and cricket was his most loving game in the family. Anwar Miandad and Sohail Miandad also played first class cricket for Pakistan.

Pakistani captain Abdul Hafeez Kardar saw Javed first time in the 70s and included him into the team. It was not easy to survive in the team with already superstars performing well like Zaheer Abbas, Majid Khan, Asif Iqbal, Sadiq Muhammad and more.But Javed was intelligent and very hard-working, he made his placed permanent in the team.He made his first century against India in his first match in Faisalabad Stadium.

The Spactacular 80s for Javed

For the tour of India, Asif Iqbal became the captain of Pakistan in 1980. Javed scored 427 runs and came close to Wasim Raja’s 450 record.He has a great Australian series later on but he had a controversy with Dennis Lilly for blocking his way for the single.

In the Home Series against India Miandad crushed Indian bowling with Zaheer Abbas and Mohsin Khan. He was the most consistent run scorer in every match for Pakistan. The great Sunil Gavaskar used to admire his batting style in his final days when he played against Pakistan. Javed Miandad scored double century agianst SiriLanka in 1984 series. He made partnership of 397 with Qasim Umar. Javed also took part in 1987 and helped Imran Khan and his team reaching semi finals in Lahore.Unfortunately due to bad bowling of Waseem Jaffar Pakistan lost.

The Great Sixer of Sharjah

Javed Miandad is the only cricketer who will always be remembered for his batting in the final match against India in Sharjah Cup Final. In 1986 when no one could believe Pakistan could win, he did the impossible by hitting a sixer on the last ball of the match. Toseef Ahmad was stranded and struggling with him but Javed kept the strike in his hand. He also scored a hundred in that match and was declared man of the match.

The 90s And Retirement

Javed was the most senior and superior batsman tilll 90s for Pakistan. He guided and trained stars like Saeed Anwar, Inzimam Ul Haq and Ramiz Raja. Javed was an excellent runner between wickets as well. In the 1992 world cup he played his senior role unforgetably to finally make Pakistan victorious in the world cup.

He played his last match against India in 1996 world cup when Pakistan lost in the quarter finals.He was never interested in commentary afterwards and coached Pakistan side multiple times.He resigned as coach just before 1999 world cup.

Javed has two sons and  a daughter.He is married to Mahrukh Ibrahim. Miandad also became religious and recorded a NAAT for GEO TV Paksitan.
