Martina Hingis (born 30 September 1980) is a Swiss professional tennis player. She won 5 grand slams and remained world No1 for 209 days. She was the youngest ever Grand Slam champion of Switzerland. She won 40 singles titles and 36 doubles titles in her short period. She was retired from international Tennis temporarily in 2002. She was the highest paid young player in the world from 1997 to 2001. She was the greatest Swiss player of all time. She won all the tournaments like French Open, US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Early Life and Tennis

Martina was originally born in  Czechoslovakia, she became Swiss citizen with naturalization. She was six years old when her parents got divorced. She immigrated to Switzerland and started practicing tennis.She became the youngest grand slam champion of the year.she won her first singles title in Germany. Hingis defeated Monica Seles in to achieve top rank and became the wrold No1 player in 1997. She also won  all four of the Grand Slam women’s doubles titles. She became the third woman to hold no1 title in both singles and doubles.

She defeated Lindsay Davenport in the final of WTA Championship. She won her third Australian open in 1999. She retained her Australian Open singles titles by beating Conchita martinez in straight sets of final. She finished the 1998 by beating Davenport in the final of WTA. She also reached the French Open final in 1999. She was only a three points away from the victory when she lost. Stefi Graph at that time told her that her age is taking a toll on her and she has played her best matches already.She used underhand serves which were not liked by the crowd. They made her burst into tears.

She managed to reach her third US Open Final and got beaten by Serena Williams. But in 1999 she was able to reclaim her No 1 spot in the world.Later in the year 2000, she reached the finals of Australian Open for singles and double’s matches. She also captured the doubles of French Open and retained her No1 ranking at the end of year 2000.

In 2001 Hingis reached her fifth consecutive final of Australian Open in 2001. She defeated the Williams sisters but lost to Jenniffer Capriati. She had a coaching relationship with her mother Melanie which ended also in 2001. But she took her decision back later in 2001. She developed an ankle problem in 2001 and lost her best form terribly.

At February 2003 she was only 22 years old but she decided to quit Tennis and retire. Her injuries were not letting her perform well and she was being booed by the crowd. She expressed her interest in horse riding and full time coaching after her retirement. She also said that she wanted to study further and quinch her knowledge thirst. She was in the list of 40 greatest Tennis players of the year.

Return to Tennis 2005

She got fit and played her first match in Pattaya Thiland. But that was an unsuccessful return and she lost to a German player Marlene. In 2006 she also played Australian Open and lost the semi finals. But she did extremely well to reach again into semi final. She defeated Maria Sharapova in Semi Finals who was the No 4 player in the world at that time. She also returned to the US Open but defeated Russian Olga in the final.

At the Australian Open she lost the quarter final match to Kim Klijsters. She was charged up after that and won the next tournament in Tokyo defeating Ana Ivanovic.She unfortunately had a hip injury which caused her to withdraw from the next tournament. She played her last grand slam whihc was US Open. She won the first two round but lost the third round. She played China Open and was set aside by the injuries that year as well.

Suspension And Third Return to Doubles

She called a press conference in 2007 and said that she is under medical investigation. Her medical test provided negative low figures and International Tennis Federation suspended her from playing any international match for two years. Hingis returned in 2008 after playing an exhibition match in Liverpool 2007. Although this event was warm up for  Wimbledon. She defeated Jana Novotna in the Wimbledon Final.

In 2010 Hingis also defeated Lindsay Davenport and mentioned that she intends to play the full season again. In 2011 she made a pair famous with Lindsay Davenport and defeated Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna in the Finals. In 2012, Lindsay and Hingis again defended their double’s title in the Wimbledon by again beating same opponents of 2011. She decided to coach  Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in April 2013. She took participation in Champions Tennis League India to boost tennis in the country.

She was very much active in 2014 and 2015 in the doubles matches.On July 11, 2015, Hingis and Mirza beat Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.In November 2015  Hingis once again feature in the Champions Tennis League in India, playing for the Hyderabad Aces team.
