Muttiah Muralitharan

Muttiah Muralitharan  born 17 April1972) is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and a king of leg spin bowling. He was rated as the highest wicket taker in one days and test cricket. He broke the record of Shane Warne, Muralitharan had previously held the record when he was able to break the record of Courtney Walsh with 519 wickets in 2004.He was 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall  and his career was glorious.  He played for Sirilankan National Side. His bowling action was criticized by most of the senior bowlders in the world and also the ICC. He was later made tto clear his bowling action. Bruce Yardly assured that his action was according to the international standards. He alsp played T20 matches for Sirilanka. His most dangerous ball was Doosra (the inswinging spin delivery) which troubled best batsmen and got him wickets. His years of playing were between 1991 to 2013. In In February 2009, he became the higest wicket taker in the both major forms of game.

Early Life and Cricket Start

He was the eldest son in his family. He studied at  St. Anthony’s College, Kandy. He joined Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club and went to England with Sirilanka in 1991 for the first time.His grandfather died at the age of 104 in July 2004.He  married a girl Madhimalar Ramamurthy,a Chennai girl, on 21 March 2005.He was in his best form in 2005 when he got married.

Domestic Cricket

Domestically, he played in the, Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in the Premier Trophy for Sirilanka. He played the County Cricket matches in England for Kent. He also played in Australia  Melbourne Renegades to play Twenty20 cricket in the Big Bash League.

International Career

Muralitharan is the first wrist-spinning off-spinner in the history of the game. He was the attacking bowler naturally. Allan Border was not in agreement with the fact that he was a  leg spinner. He was actually the wrist spinner who used his magic.

In the test cricket, On 28 August 1992 at the age of 20, Muralitharan made his debut against Australia. He pulled victories against England and New Zealand in 1992–93 for Sirilanka.Former Sirilankan Captain Ranatunga said he was thoroughly convinced that Muralitharan’s precocious talent would signal a new era in Sri Lanka’s short Test history

Mid Career

On 16 March 1997, Muralitharan became the first Sri Lankan to reach 100 test wickets. He also took his first ten wickets against Zimbabwe in 2010.In the same year later in Autust, he was able to pull out career-best test match figures of 16 for 220.In the March 2004 season against Australia, he became the fastest and the youngest bowler to reach 500 wickets.He had already surpassed the biggest giant Courtney Walsh of West Indies and Shane Warne of Australia in May that year.

During the Ttest series of 2007 against England in December 2007, he claimed his 709th test victim. According to Shane Warne, Murli was going strong to take 1000 wickets in the future. In 2008 tour of India, Muralitharan finished the match with 11 wickets for 110. He was the legendary bowler to take five or more wickets in an innings on 67 occasions in Test cricket.

One Day Career

He played his first match ODI against India On 12 August 1993 . On 27 October 2000 in Sharjah, Muralitharan captured 7 for 30 against India (his best figures). In 9 April 2002 he was the peak wicket taking bowler in ODIs. Adam Gilchrist, of Australia wanted to attack him in his glory days, but he was partially successful.Murli played in five Cricket World Cup. He played the world cup 2007 fina where Australia defeated Sirilanka. He was left out of the team in 2008 from West Indian tour.

Murli was a No 11 batsman. He was not forced to play up in the order to Siri lanka.  His highest Test score of 67 came against India at Kandy in 2001. During playing in Australia, he was reportedly unhappy with the crowds sometimes because they heckled him.He was a part of  target of an egg throwing incident in Hobart. The media response for Murlidharan was “When you come to Australia, you expect such incidents”.

Retirement And Critisism on Bowling Action

On 7 July 2010, Murlidharan announced that he will retire from the international cricket. He had to get 8 more wickets in his last test match for completing 800 wickets.He completed his target and Siri Lanka got the victory for 10 wickets.He was called back in the team for playing world cup 2011. He gave up his retiremtnt decision earlier made in 2007 and decided to play until 2011. He said that “This World Cup will be my last outing. I am retiring totally from international cricket “.

Michael Holding of West Indies also criticized Murli for his bowling action.But he took his critism back after seeing his test performances.Former Newzealand captain who was legendary in the world cup 1992  Martin Crowe, called for Muralitharan’s doosra to be monitored more closely.

On the famous bowling action of Murlidaran, a number of books and articles have been published.The books spoke in favor of Murli and said that ICC should redefine their rules in the books of cricket as they accused murli multiple times.
