The Great Raj Kapoor

The great Indian cinema actor of twentieth century Raj Kapoor was born in 14 December 1942. he was also a producer and a director of all time great movies as well. He won many awards for his services to Indian Cinema including two national Film Awards and 9 Film fare Awards in India.He was born in Peshawar frontier province of India, he was a Punjabi originally. He did acting for many decades from 1935 to 1982. His brothers Shashi and Shammi kapoor late were also big Bollywood stars who became senior artists in later age. His other two siblings died at early age. His first film was Inqilab in which he acted as child artist.

First Big Break And Film Career

Raj got his first big brake into the cinema when he played a leading role in the movie Neel Kamal in 1947. Dilip Kumar was also a new actor at that time so they had a great competition. He worked with Nargis as co-star in most of his hit movies. His most successful blockbusters were black and white moves. His first successful movie as a producer and director was Barsaat with Nargis. The love story is still popular among the people of sub continent.

After Barsaat fame, he went on to make great storical and musical wonders like Awara (in 1951), Shiree 420 in 1955, Chori Chori 1956, Jis Desh me Ganga Behti Hai 1960. He received fame as wonderful actor in more films like “Anhonee 1952, Aah (1953),Anari (1959) and Dil hi to hai 1963. His first color feature film was Sangam which he directed also in 1964.He acted as lead actor in more films like “Around the world in 1966 and Sapno ka saudagar  in 1968” with young Hema Malini. But they were basically flops on the box office.

Career In 70s And 80s

He produced “Mera naam joker” in 1970 which was completed in almost seven years.That was also the debut film of his son Rishi Kapoor as child. That film also proved to be a flop on the box office and played major part in the financial crisis of Kapoor family. His brother on the other hand Shammi kapoor was setting good standards of acting in the Bollywood with his leading roles.”Mera naam joker” became massively popular in later decades as the classic movie of all time.

He took Rishi Kapoor in his own film ‘Bobby’ in 1973. Bobby introduced Dimple Kapadia as female leading actress who later on married Rajesh Khanna when he was at his best. In early 80s and late 70s, he produced and directed films that mainly raised the sensitive issues of Females in the society.  Prem Rog in 1982 was musical hit with Rishi Kapoor. ‘Ram Teri Ganga Meli” was another greatest hit movie of 80s in 1985, introducing new actress Mandakani.  He appeared in a British film “Kim” in 1984 which was also his last acting performance in any film.

Death and Legacy

Raj Kapoor developed the disease of Asthma which became very serious in his 60s. He was out of action in 1988 when he planned the direction of musical romantic film “Henna’. He offered Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiar the leading role in Henna but could not continue due to health crisis. This movie was later on finished and directed by his son Randhir kapoor in 1991.

He died when he was just 63 years old due to Asthma complications in 11988. He remained in the India Institute of Medical Sciences for one month before he finally passed away. His legacy still continues in Indian film industry. He is still missed in India and Sub Continent as a “Guru” actor and director. His real fame was due to his cheerful personality. He is regarded as a master of film making still in India along with Yash Chopra. His power was his intelligent understanding of Indian culture and public taste. His movies served as entertainment as well as eye opener on many social issues.

He was the eldest in the Kapoor family who served Indian film industry for decades.His beautiful grand daughters “Karishma and Kareena Kapoor” both made a significant name in the film industry. Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor (late) also ruled the Indian cinema in 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
