Introduction and Personal Life

Wasim Akram was born in June 3,1996. He is ranked as the best left arm fast bowler and greatest all rounder for Pakistan after Imran Khan. He took most wickets and is the second highest wicket taker after  Siri Lankan Murli Dharan. He is also ranked among the best cricketers of history like Allan Donald, Imran Khan, Glen Mcrath and Sachin Tendulkar.He was included into the ICC cricket hall of fame in September 2009. He took 414 wickets in test cricket and took 502 wickets in ODIs. He was the first bowler in the world to take the 400 wickets in ODIs.

He was born in the Arian family from Lahore city.He was a student of Govt Ismaia College was a good cricketer in college.He had a history of diabetes in the family and also developed the disease when he was just 30. It was stressful for him but he continued his cricket as his late wife Huma Mufti supported him well ever since their marriage in 1995. Huma died of organ faliure. Akram then built relationships with an Australian lady Shaniera and they got engaged. He moved from Lahore to Karachi with his wife and kids.

Cricket Career

In 1988 Akram played for English County and became captain in 1998. In 1984 he made his test debut for Pakistan against Newzealand. He took 10 wickets in second match. He really impressed Imran Khan from the beginning of his performance and was applauded by Javed Miandad as well. He played superbly in 1987 world cup held in India-Pakistan.However he also had a hard time bowling against Australians on flat Pakistani batting wickets.

He reached the mark of 100 wickets in ODI in Sharjah Cup in 1990.He also took 100 wickets from 1986-1989.In 1992 world cup, Akram was the leading wicket taker with Imran khan. He took 18 wickets.His most memorable bowling for Pakistan was the clean bold of two English batsmen in the world cup Final where he cleaned up Allan lamb and Chris Lewis on two consecutive deliveries to become the man of the match. Akram still remembers that the biggest match of his life.

His journey was filled with quick left arm fast bowling which continued to trouble the world batsmen during 1993-1997. His most reliable  partners in the 90s were Aaqib Javed and Waqar Younis. Mustaq Ahmed was also a legend for Pakistan in those days who supported Waseem to start the bowling for Pakistan. He played 131 matches during 1992-97 and took 198 wickets.

Pakistan suffered defeat against Australia in the world cup 1999 when Inzimam was given controversial run out by the Umpire in the Final. Wasim was also the best bowler for Pakistan in World Cup 2003 where he took 12 wickets in 6 matches. Pakistan did not reach the next round in that world cup as well and Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket. All the major players were punished by Amir Sohail for not playing well in the world cup 2003 including Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Inzimam and Rashid  Latif which resulted in ending the careers of Saeed Anwar and Waqar Younis as well.

Post Retirement Career

Wasim took 22 man of the match awards in ODIs. After retirement he played for the English county and finished his contract. He started his media commentator career with ESPN and Star Sports. Major tournaments he took place in were Women’s World Cup, 2009 ICC World 20, ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa and 2011 ICC World Cup.

Wasim was also the coach of Pakistani team in 2010. India also wanted Wasim to become the bowling coach but it could not happen due to the circumstances between the two countries. The current young talent Muhammad Irfan for Pakistan was also signed and promoted by Wasim Akram. Akram himself will remain a legend because he bowled with genuine interest and passion. His incoming swing delivery was hardest bowl to play by star batsmen.Pakistan hugely relied on Akram for wicket taking in the time of crisis.That gave him the name of “Sultan of Swing”.along with Waqar Younis. They were combined called the famous “Two Ws” of Pakistan. Ricky Ponting said at his retirement that Wasim Akram and Curtly Ambrose were the most dangerous bowlers he faced in Australia.

Akram was a model in a number of TV commercials for Pakistani channels. He promoted brands like Ufone in 2011-12.. He was also the only cricketer to take ten wickets more than twice in a test match for Pakistan. Akram also made four hat tricks in the international cricket for Pakistan.
