“Syed Zaheer Abbas Kirmani” was a former Pakistani cricketer. He was born on 24 July 1947 and was known as the best batsman sub continent has ever produced in 4 decades. He is also famous for becoming the best batsman in 1983 when he scored three centuries consecutively. He was a right handed batsman with part time off break bowling capabilities. He was a great inspiration for legends like Javed Miandad, Imran Khan and Inzamam ul Haq.

Zaheer Abbas played his first test match in 1969 and scored 274 runs in his second test match against England. Abbas was called by a nick name”Run Machine”. He used to score almost a thousand runs in one season. He faced world’s toughest bowlers and troubled them constantly.Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar once said that Indian Bowlers used to say in the ground “Bas Karo Zaheer”, means ” Stop now Zaheer” for his smashing batting and hitting in the ground.

Zaheer was a natural stroke player, he played many spectacular innings with Javed Miandad together. Asif Iqbal and Majid Khan were his seniors but he showed greater potential than his senior cricketers. He.He was a simple person with clear approach to his goals. It was very difficult to get him out when he was hitting all around like a set batsman. He felt more easy in the limited overs cricket than in test matches. In 1985 he was the most dangerous batsman along with Vivian Richards of West Indies.

Zaheer Abbas was also given the award of pride of performance by the government of Pakistan.He stand among the Imtiaz Ahmad and Asif Iqbal in that category.His top one day innings were:

108 against Australia in 1981.
123 against SiriLanka in 1982.
105 against India in 1983.
103 against Newzealand in 1983.

In Test cricket, few of his best innings were:

274 against England in 1971.
240 against England in 1974.
101 against Australia in 1976.
176 against India in 1978.
135 against Newzealand in 1975.
215 against India in 1982.
168 against India in 1983.

His peak season in Cricket was 1982-83. He has scored four one day hundreds in that season which is highest for any cricketer at that time. Australian batsman “Dean Jones” was a good friend of Zaheer Abbas and he considered his approach as cool and calm in the field.

Zaheer Abbas also had the privilege to captain the Pakistani team in 1983 and 1984.He retired in 1985 from international cricket but kept serving as a match referee in various international matches.He also managed Pakistani team as a manager later on and finally in 2015 he became the president of ICC (International Cricket Council).Pakistan still miss a legendary performer like Zaheer in the team and hope that someone will soon emerge close to him in the near future.
